NOTES TO THE EDITORS
CAAB was the first campaign to reveal (in
1996/7) that NSA/USAF Menwith Hill was to be designated the European
Ground Relay Station for the Space Based Infra Red System - SBIRS (renamed
the Space Tracking and Surveillance System - STSS). Soon after,
we discovered that Fylingdales was also to play a significant role.
Fylingdales is being upgraded now - in an answer to a Parliamentary
Question (asked by CAAB) Geoff Hoon said:
Completion of equipment installation work and
testing of the upgrade is expected by October 2005, from which time the
radar will be able to support the missile defence mission.
Decommissioning and removal of existing equipment will not be complete
until summer 2006.
In 1999 Lindis Percy on behalf of CAAB brought
out a legal action to stop the building of the two SBIRS radomes at NSA/USAF
Menwith Hill.
