Motion to Ryedale District Council for Full Council, 11th November 2004
In view of the lack of clarity over the status of RAF Fylingdales:
Once again the government has not consulted/informed RDC over potential change of use for ‘Fylingdales’.The request from the US government re – "Fylingdales will not be ‘decided’ until after the General Election."The potential escalation of the military threat to the UK in general and Ryedale in particular.
The previous lack of information and the feeding of the people of Ryedale with ‘reassurances’.So as to clarify the present position and prevent this unacceptable situation being repeated this Council calls for a Public Enquiry into Fylingdales.
This enquiry to cover:
The alleged request by the US to site interceptor missiles in silos at Fylingdales.
The need, if any, for ‘Fylingdales’ in a National Park.If ‘Fylingdales’ is needed for the defence of the UK.What purpose ‘Fylingdales’ serves.Any other area that is requested by a large number of people of Ryedale, Yorkshire or UK in a pre-enquiry consultation.

Latest Planning Applications at NSA Menwith Hill
Here are the latest NOPD's (Notice of Proposed Developments) at NSA Menwith Hill received by Harrogate Planning Office as from 26 March 2004:
6.90.179.F.CROWND - 2 x lighting columns to Skate Park
6.500.224.G.CROWND - Cycle Shelter [came in on 27 Feb and got missed somehow ... but seems insignificant!]
6.500.273.A.CROWND - Temporary Antenna Installation [came in on 2 March]
6.500.164.B.CROWND - 3 x Generating Units and Control Room [came in on 5 March]
Just to let you know that there are significant developments going on at Menwith Hill at the moment. The base is being totally enclosed with a further weld mesh fence, topped with razor wire and more cameras being installed. The Planning Application for this was 'approved' by Harrogate Planning Department in December 2003 and was as follows:
PA No: 6.500.78.B.CROWND - Erection of 2.4 metre perimeter fence with razor wire topping round South OPS Antenna Field plus 36 static CCTV cameras on fence line plus 4 x 360 degree CCTV cameras  8 metre towers plus erection of farm building, patrol roads and associated works.
At the same time a new and significant entrance on to and from the dangerous B6451 Pateley Bridge Road - with metal rolling gates (in line with bases like JAC Molesworth) is being constructed and will soon open. The original entrance at Nessfield Gate (a few hundred yards from the new entrance) is now blocked by a new building to do with the development of a construction area.
Talking to local farmers, it is unclear where the sheep and cows will enter on to the fields round the base as the new fence will block off any exisiting farmer's gate.
This development is proof of further militarisation of the Yorkshire Dales by the US Visiting Forces.
